Happy apocalypse!
Guido Van Lier, art director at Vrij Nederland, asked me to come up with an, if possible, not so common illustration for the Christmas issue. So I made a combination with the 'upcoming' Apocalypse, happening just a few days before X-mas. The end of the world never looked as warm and joyful as this.

Karina
Finished and ready for printing. 'Karina schildert kunst' ('Karina paints art'), a new book with Dutch writer Frans Lasès coming early 2013.
Woohoo, New York Times!!!
A few weeks ago AD Alexandra Zsigmond from the New York Times contacted me to ask if I was interested in doing a small black & white piece for the Op-Ed Letters section. I was hoping that SI golden medal would bring some attention to my work, but I surely wasn't expecting a mail from the NYT... the very next day! So thank you very much Alexandra for my first ever US commission.

Society of Illustrators Gold Medal
I don't get a phone call from New York everyday (it's actually the first one ever ;-)), but this one made me shiver and smile: I won a Society of Illustrators gold medal for my Bokrijk piece!!!! Better start saving for that plane ticket to NYC...

"I dreamed that the cartoon characters were alive and I could meet them, until the day that a fat and ugly pirate came to kidnap all the children who watched cartoons. I got into action and one morning put him a trap, he stopped." - Laura, aged 9, Spain

Goose board game
I was asked by the open air museum of Bokrijk to come up with a new 450 x 360 cm large goose board game to replace the old one designed 10 years ago. They wanted a fresh look and absurd interpretation of what is actually a classic in Belgian and Dutch board games, so they gave me 'carte blanche'.
The difficult part was to make sure that, according to the rules of the game, all the numbers matched with their corresponding action (for example 52 is a prison so you have to stop until you throw an even number with the dice, number 31 a well where you have to stop until you throw an odd number,...) but also to keep the illustration dynamic and exciting. The dust cloud seemed to be a blessing for the composition and the perfect coat hanger for the numbers and running people and animals.

Raak! - Wild van jonge boeken
On February 16th I was invited by Raak! to talk a bit about 'De dokter en het leger van Davy' and the new book I am working on. Star of the evening was the fantastic Bart Moeyaert. More photos (by Mathys Delva) can be found on this Facebook page.
