Feest in't Park

From 2002 until 2007 I did the posters for Feest in't Park, a world music festival in the heart of Bruges. Recently I was asked to design a 8 by 3 meter banner with the character I used in the last 4. I'm not going to show the original posters, because... well, they were made a long time ago... But I still like the shape and movement of the lady, so it doesn't look that bad at all ;-)

Boekenbeurs: the process

Because Boek.be was very pleased with the outcome of the 2011 Boekenbeurs poster, they asked me to come up with a 'making of' to put on the BB Facebook profile. I thought I'd post it on my blog as well, so here it is: from rough idea to finished artwork.

The idea: a lot of books representing the stands and interior elements like doors and stairs and people doing all sorts of things with those book.

Looking for characters and their position. I was inspired by the map of the book fair to come up with the space that was needed for the title and other information.

Mixing the characters with the books.

Looking for the final composition. I added some characters and had to lose a few too. The client wanted to see all the aspects of the book fair in the illustration: book signing, lectures, workshops,...

The final artwork. I had to change a few things digitally like erasing 'boekenbeer' on one of the covers and adding a mic to the lady at the bottom.

In september 2009 De Eenhoorn, probably the best publishing house for children's books in Belgium, asked me to illustrate a story by famous Dutch writer Edward van de Vendel. I was, to say the least, very pleased that they wanted me to do the job. And as you can see, I really took my time... The book will be published in ~~June~~ September, so as an appetizer I can only show a few spreads...

I'm very proud to announce that these 2 illustrations were selected out of more than 6000 submissions from over 2000 illustrators and will be published in the prestigious '200 Best Illustrators Worldwide 11/12'. The book will be out for Christmas, shipped to 30.000 art buyers and art directors all over the world and can also be bought directly from the Luerzer's Archive online store.

The illustrations were made for the Intermediair Multiculti Gids (NL) and Zeeland Magazine (NL).

Phantoms of Wing

A couple of years ago my wife heard the band Fountains Of Wayne on the radio and said: "What is the name of that band? Phantoms Of Wing?" I thought that would be the coolest name ever in history, so I wrote it down somewhere.

One day I found a piece in a newspaper about Egungun's in Benin and Nigeria and was really fascinated about the costumes, the prints and bright colours. So I cut it out and stored it in a drawer.

Then I decided I wanted to do an exhibition with portraits of people all sitting down in the same way, a bit like a collection. In the Museo del Prado in Madrid there is a wall with 3 paintings from Velazquez, 3 large portraits that have quite the same look and feel. This kind of portrait is classic and iconic, and I believe it has an aesthetic that is very appealing, even more if there are a lot of them shown together.

Finally I combined all this and worked out a theme for the exhibition. I did some research on African rituals and costumes, found the photographs of Phyllis Galembo and transferred the masks, patterns, colours and prints to costumes of Western rituals, religion, commercials and popular culture. What if the Western world would adapt all of the African imagery and project it on even the oldest traditions. What would the Easter Bunny look like if he comes to our doors with a basket full of Easter eggs? And Mickey Mouse, on a picture with your children in Disneyland? Would they look like the Phantoms of Wing?

The exhibition started yesterday, the 7th of November and ends sunday, the 5th of December. Open only on fridays and weekends. The Print Gallery is situated in the Muntstraat 8 in Antwerp. Hope to see you there!

Whoops, it's been a month since my last post... Well, maybe that's because I'm working on some rather big commissions that take more than a few months to finish. So I'm not sure if I'm allowed to show you this, but I like to do it anyway.
This illustration is one of five, no... six... or maybe eight illustrations for an interactive website that wants to inform adopted children about adoption, where they come from, their feelings... There are a few games (this piece is one of them) and some interactive pages.
I'm doing all the illustrations with a graphic tablet because it makes things easier for the poor guy who has to program everything in Flash. I'm not a huge of vector illustrations and Adobe Illustrator, so I used Photoshop instead, dozens of layers and some downloaded brushes.
I teamed up with graphic designer Balder from De Barbaren and Frederik, a Figure8 computer wizard, and it's been great fun since day 1!
